Life Story for James Shannon

James Shannon
James (Jimmy) Shannon

James Joseph Shannon, 62, born and raised in Brooklyn, passed away on March 10, 2018 surrounded by close family and friends after a very long and brave battle with cancer.

Family and friends can pay their respects at the Andrew Torregrossa Funeral Home on 79 th St in Brooklyn. Visitation will be Tuesday March 13 from 2-5 PM and 7-9 PM. His funeral mass will be at St. Athanasius Church on Wednesday March 14 at 9:45 AM. Burial will follow the funeral at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Jimmy was born on July 21, 1955. He graduated from New Utrecht High School where he was an all city quarterback and had tryouts with the Kansas City and Toronto professional baseball teams. He later earned his BS Degree from Manhattan College.

Jimmy was married to Karen E. Stanford (Shannon) on May 13, 2017. Although, they were only married a short time they were together for 13 years.

Jimmy’s proudest accomplishments were his four children: Steven, Janine, James (JJ) and Daniel. Each of them is different, but they all share his traits for love of family and having a good time.

He was an intense, smart, hard-working and fun-loving man with many friends who lived life to the fullest. He truly loved family, friends and socializing. He enjoyed both his homes in Pennsylvania and Florida. He was pretty good at golf; although, he was known for filling out the scorecard before playing and liberally taking mulligans.

Jimmy worked at Con Edison for 30 years and was well-known as a guy who could get things done. He was the General Manager of Gas Project Management and was responsible for successfully managing multi-million dollar projects. He was very proud of his professional accomplishments that included: establishing a project management group for Gas; building the Parkview and Rockview substations; building a utility tunnel under the Harlem River; converting steam generating stations in Manhattan from oil to gas and construction projects in lower Manhattan after 9/11. Prior to joining ConEdison, he worked at Brooklyn Union Gas.

James is survived by his beloved mother Louise (Nocella) Shannon. She has always been his rock and raised Jimmy to be a wonderful fun-loving man of integrity. He is also survived by his brother Robert Shannon and sister-in- law Marguerite; his four children Steven, Janine, JJ and Daniel along with their mothers Debra Shannon and Nancy Shannon; his 2 nieces Victoria Shannon and Kimberly Stanford; his nephew Robert Shannon; his mother-in- law Peg Stanford and his father-in- law Richard Stanford; his brother-in- law David Stanford and sister-in- law Tina; and his very dear friends Nick and Gina Defonte along with many other friends too numerous to mention.

James is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Shannon and his brother Joseph Shannon.

Although his life was short, he touched many people with his compassion and love for life.
